Happiness is a thing that seems to come and go in everyone’s lives. Life is a mixture of moments colored by happiness as well as moments of suffering. As humans we have a constant desire to be and acquire more than what we have at this moment. This craving creates suffering as we are unhappy we haven’t yet acquired what we crave for , whether it is a love relationship or a dream car. But when we do manage to acquire what we crave for, it can make us happy for a while until another desire pops into our minds.
This is nothing to be ashamed or guilty about as this is the nature of a human being. We are constantly seeking expansion and growth. No matter what we acquire and achieve there will always be something we crave for. No matter how much we achieve in the external world, this craving for more will always be there as we seek constant expansion.
According to spiritual gurus, the way we can truly be happy and satisfied is by looking within. Touching that part of ourselves that is boundless and vast. Many gurus like sadhguru and Eckart Tolle talks about how one can be in a constant state of satisfaction by being in touch with the ‘inner consciousness’ or the ‘very essence of life’. They say that what we crave for is not for all things but to be all. This is only possible through being in touch with our inner consciousness.
I understand this concept intellectually but realizing it as a experience is a bit more difficult. Practices like meditation and yoga has helped me to reduce my thoughts a bit and achieve some peace. But to get rid of all thoughts and be completely in touch with the consciousness is a bit more difficult. It is said that being initiated by a live guru can help speed up the process of enlightenment. This is something I hope to do one day so that I can achieve a state of constant peace.
But for the moment understanding that the nature of a human being is to constantly want more and this creates suffering can help us accept this nature about ourselves and strive to get more in touch with the inner consciousness.
