If you are vata body type there are certain things that you can do to ground yourself and be more present. Vata body type can be distinguished by slenderness, dryness, strong intellect, active mind, nervous disposition and love for variety. When out of balance the above qualities can become intensified and vata type can easily go into a nervous breakdown or become agitated.
Being a vata myself I found doing physical activity to be the most important thing I can do. Vata type is more inclined to live in their heads and therefore it is important to get the energy flowing into the body through exercise. Specially dancing and swimming are great for vata type. Dancing helps with grounding and water sports help increase the kapha or grounded nature of a person.
As vata have very active minds, its important to take the time to meditate. Focusing on the breath for a few moments can be very helpful. In addition, doing some mantra chanting like the kirtan kriya meditation where one chants SA THA NA MA can help ground the vata types.
3. Communal Activity
Vata loves been part of a group and being around people who share their vision. Therefore, it is important to get involved in clubs and communities that have similar goals to vata.
4. Nourishing food
Vata needs food that makes them feel taken care of and nourished. The tastes sweet and sour are recommended for vata along with rooty grounding fruits and vegetables. Vegetables like kumara, beetroot, carrots that are roots and sweet in flavor are nourishing for the vata type. Sweet fruits like juicy apples, pawpaw, mango and so on is recommended for the vata types. Bitter and astringent flavors are to be taken in minimal quantities. Stimulant like caffeine needs to be minimized as vata is easily stimulated.
5. Calming Herbs
Herbs that are calming to the nerves are recommended for vata type. For example herbs like ashwagandha which helps body adapt to stress and asifautida which is vata reducing is great for the vata type. Also brahmi, which is a brain tonic is great for the vata type. I take ashwagandha with milk and ginger at bedtime and it has a very calming effect on me and help me sleep better. I also take brahmi with my tea in the morning to help increase the mental sharpness as said in ayurveda. I have had good results so far. Make sure to seek medical advice if you are on other medications before taking these herbs.
6. Soothing and loving music
Vata can benefit from calming music and sounds of water. These can help vata feel taken care of. Vata is naturally fearful and easily agitated. This quality can be balanced by soothing and loving music. Even listening to romantic music can be helpful to vata.
I am sure many of you instinctively do the above as vata type people. I hope you enjoyed the read and please leave a comment on your practice as a vata type.
